On the edge of my sunshine, there is a sliver of darkness. I know happiness is around the corner, and in those lines around my eyes, but its just not mine to claim.

Dr. Ahmer Ansari marries Dr. Zoya Khan after a torrid week in Egypt where they finally consummate their much anticipated love affair that had the whole of Karachi lingering in anxiety, and as urban legend has it, housewives chopping fingers as their eyes were glued to their kitchen plasma tvs. Zoya, 24, enthusiastically responded to Ahmer's experience, evolving and easing the edge off his tension and tragic hero persona. Ahmer rejoiced and drank at the fountain of youth, reveling in Zoya's carefree spirit, unlined by fears, unhindered by the doubts of a more mature woman. At times he felt like he was 25 again but his aching back and his tired muscles told him otherwise. Finally, he was able to resolve his father issues, and become his own man, and a young intern had facilitated that process.

My dad never loved me! boohoo!
On the way back to Karachi, Ahmer noticed Zoya joking with a young Misri sales clerk. A little jealous, he came up behind Zoya. The clerk signaled to her that her father was there, and this tormented Ahmer who drank three shots of tequila on the airplane and got wasted. However, once in their hometown, the passionate love affair continued for a about a year.

And...Bakistani women are hot!
Sheena went to work for the Aga Khan foundation that paid her handsomely. Dr. Irfan and Anjie were thrown out of the story as the plot no longer needed comic relief, and their storyline scarcely provided any the way it turned. They never marry. Anjie sued Irfan for sexual harassment, and Naeem Bukhari represented her.

I also fund an urban planning department at MIT.
Dr. Zoya grew up, and grew out her hair, and got gold highlights. She got an offer to pursue a Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins with full scholarship, but turned it down because she did not want to abandon Ahmer for three years. Although Zoya was decidely clear about her commitment, this sacrifice made her secretly resentful of Ahmer who was becoming increasingly needy and guarded of her whereabouts.
After dealing with an incest victim, she began to wonder how Haseena Moin wrote in a love relationship between a girl and her locus standi uncle/mamoo even if he were adopted. Indian films regularly play on the famous archetype of the conniving mamoo and the gullible, trusting niece. (Tabu turned into sex worker/bar dancer by mamoo in Chandni Bar).

To do list: do mujra, remove make-up, kill mamoo.
Why would Haseena do that? We loved Haseena. She was the hope and god of the 80s. She visits our house once in a while and I have the urge to hug her, but I am a repressed 80s product and am physically unable to.

"Its just that it was kinky that way!"
Years go by. A child is born from the union of Ahmer and Zoya - child of unknown sex and age, but who was born as a baby; (s)he is not available for most of the shooting and has a screen double.

goo goo ga ga
As their relationship deteriorates, the lust fades, and work and child care overwhelm, Ahmer finds himself relying more and more on Sheena who was originally jealous of Zoya, but has settled into a new relationship. Sheena gives Ahmer good advice and together they discuss the future of the SASI hospital and decide that they will write a proposal to the government to build a new ward for victims of bomb blasts.

Sheena leaves the Aga Khan. They work late nights together and reignite a camaraderie - which is platonic from Sheema's side, but Ahmer is finding her able bodied.

Because I'm worth it!
After a particularly bad accident in the city, Zoya, now 39, seems visibly chagrined after treating a surviving suicide bomber, age 11. Ahmer is reminded of the time when she was an intern and was perturbed by the death of a young bomb victim, and he had had to give her a pep talk about how you must become thick skinned. Touched as if by an angel, and reminded of those times when Dhoop Kinare was first aired in 1987, he kisses her and says: "You haven't changed one bit."

(Zia is dead; and channels now allow quick kisses.)

No kisses. Chador lo.. Harami larkion!
Zoya reveals that she has been talking to a major pharmaceutical company and they had agreed to build a brand new AC wing in the hospital - but the deal fell through because she wasn't able to promote their useless (and actually quite terrible) drug for children. Ahmer is disgusted by Zoya's capitalist mindset, and lamenting the loss of her innocence for which he is partially responsible, he storms out of the office.

He goes straight to Sheena's house, and walks in on Sheena and her lover who is a woman.

Bakistani women are hot!
Shocked and hurt, he storms out yet again. Sheena follows in a pink slip, and in her driveway, exclaims in extreme vulnerability, that its always been about the person for her. Ahmer embraces her and tells her that he would never judge her. He returns to Zoya.
A few emotional and filler episodes cover the prolonged illness and death of Baba. Zoya is heartbroken and needs a change of pace. The house reminds her of her father and haunts her.

Oh Sera, Sera, don't kill me. Saira Kazmi: I don't direct this play anymore. Tell the Szabist students.
A year later, Zoya hastily takes her GREs, applies, and leaves to do a masters in the U.S. She goes with the blessings of Sheena. Sheena and she have long reconciled their differences.

I "heart" America.
Ahmer, Sheena, and Sheena's lover (a nurse) settle into a comfortable ménage à trois. Together all three raise Ahmer and Zoya's child who goes to Lyceum. Zoya learns about medical ethics in America and is reformed on her return. She, Sheena, And Ahmer become best friends forever. Zoya becomes romantically involved in a long distance relationship with an African-American man she met in Baltimore, and is always distracted. She becomes addicted to Ritalin.

Indian chicks are hot.
